Session 6 - Lower Limb Nerve Injuries Flashcards
What is the endoneurium?
Connective tissue surrounding each axon
What are fascicles?
Grounds of axons bundled together
What is perineurium?
Connective tissue surrounding fascicles
What is epineurium?
Connective tissue surrounding groups of fascicles
What is vasa nervorum?
Blood vessels within epineurium
What is neurapraxia?
Mildest type of nerve injury, temporary physiological block of conduction in affected axons without loss of axonal continuity
How long does neurapraxia take to recover?
Days to weeks
What is axonotmesis?
Loss of continuity of axons and myelin sheath
How long does axonal regeneration take?
1-3mm/day
What is neurotmesis?
Partial or complete division of axons, endoneurium, perineurium and epineurium
What is Wallerian degeneration?
Axon distal to injury degenerates
