Session 3: Basics of the Central Nervous System Flashcards
Functions of the midbrain (mesencephalon).
Eye movements and reflex responses to sound and vision.
Functions of pons.
Feeding like mastication and sucking reflex.
Sleep
Functions of the medulla.
Cardiovascular and respiratory centres.
Contains a major motor pathway (medullary pyramids).
The medullary pyramids will decussate aka cross over.
What is sulcus?
A groove in the brain separating adjacent gyri.
What is a gyrus?
A ridge or fold in the brain.
What is a fissure?
A large split between adjacent large areas of the brain.
Functions of the frontal lobe.
Higher cognition
Motor function
Speech
Functions of the parietal lobe.
Sensation
Spatial awareness
Functions of the temporal lobe.
Memory, smell and hearing
Functions of the occipital lobe.
Vision
Functions of the cerebellum.
Coordination and motor learning.
What is the optic chiasm?
A site where fibres in the visual system cross over.
What is the uncus?
Part of the temporal lobe and the site of olfactory cortex. This can hearniate and compress the midbrain and compress the oculomotor nerve.
What are the medullary pyramids?
Location of descending motor fibres.
What is the corpus callosum?
Fibres connecting the two cerebral hemispheres to interact with each other.
