Session 2 (Intro To DNA) Flashcards
What is a nucleotide?
Sugar+base+phosphate group
What is a nucleoside?
Sugar + base
No phosphate
What happens if there is no OH on the 3rd carbon?
Elongation ceases
What is the difference between ribose and deoxyribose?
Ribose= OH on carbon 2 Deoxyribose= H on carbon 2 (lacking an O)
How many hydrogen bonds are formed between G+C, A+T, A+U?
2 between g and c
3 between A+U, A+T
What bonds do nucleotides makes?
Phosphodiester bonds
Why do H bonds form in DNA?
There. Is slight polarity in the bases
What direction does DNA polymerase read the template strand?
3’->5’
What is the origin of replication?
Particular sequence in genome at which replication is initiated
What is needed to start initiation?
Primase
What strands do you get during elongation? And why?
Leading and lagging strands
Lagging strand consists of okazaki fragments because the DNA polymerase is reading the template strand in a 3’-5’ direction
How are the okazaki fragments repaired?
Ligase enzymes
