Session 2 Flashcards
What is the role of the kidney?
Fluid balance
Electrolyte balance
Acid/Base balance
Hormone production
What is a renal corpuscle?
The Glomerulus and Bowman’s capsule
What is the parietal layer of the Bowman’s capsule made of?
Simple squamous epithelium
What are podocytes?
Visceral layer of the Bowman’s capsule wraps around the capillary endothelium
What aids filtration at the Glomerulus?
The epithelium are fenestrated
What increases leakiness of the basement membrane at the Glomerulus?
The endothelium and podocytes share a basement membrane.
What specialisation of the endothelium in the PCT aids their function?
Simple cuboidal have a brush border to increase surface area for reabsorption
What are the 4 sections of the Loop of Henle?
Pars recta
Thin descending limb (Looks like a capiullary, but no RBCs)
Thin ascending limb
Thick ascending limb
What epithelium line the Thin descending limb of the Loop of Henle?
Simple squamous - DO NOT do active transport
What epithelium is in the Thick ascending limb of the Loop of Henle?
Simple cuboidal - Active transport
What is different between the DCT & PCT?
The DCT has a larger lumen
The PCT has a brush border
What does the DCT have?
Many mitochondria - Think why?
What is the Juxtaglomerular apparatus?
Specialised structure formed by the DCT and the glomerular afferent arteriole.
What does the Juxtaglomerular apparatus do?
Allows communication between the DCT and Glomerulus
What is the difference between the Collecting ducts and Loop of Henle?
Similar appearance, but the Collecting ducts are larger and more irregular
