When are storm, sanitary, and water service connections used?
Every lot in a subdivision gets a storm, sanitary and water service connection
where does the responsibility of a municipal contractor end?
responsibility terminates and the front property line
where can you find the location and depth of each service connection?
this is shown on your drawing invert, service connection describes its depth
Which services are gravity based connections?
storm and sanitary pipes are gravity sewer system, flow travels towards existing city mains
where are sanitary mains located in a subdivision?
at the area with the lowest elevation
What are shallow utilities and where are they located?
-natural gas lines, powerlines, and telephone lines
-located outside of the pavement on either side of the street
What is the minimum seperation between storm and sanitary sewers?
1 metre
where are curves not allowed in storm and sanitary sewers?
storm and san sewers cannot curve at any point between 2 manholes
What are the requirements for water mains?
3 metres separation between water mains and sanitary/storm sewers
water mains must be looped unless it is short dead end less than 150 m long
Water mains require fittings when:
-there is a direction change (unless it is a curved water main)
-there are two or more water mains meeting at a point
-there is a change in size of the water main
Water mains DO NOT have manholes
Do water mains curve?
water mains generally follow straight alignment between fittings, but may be curved if the pipe centreline is greater than or equal to 60 m
What is the purpose of fittings in water mains?
-the beginning and the end of the water main
-at changes in direction
-when more than two pipes meet at a point
What is the purpose of easements?
-strip of land within a private lot for the purpose of operating the water and sewer systems
-the city has 24/7 access to the easement for the purpose it is intended
-an easement must be atleast 3 metres wide, could be more when two pipes are placed side by side
