What is Highway Dedication?
-a condition for subdivision approval
-developers are obliged to dedicate land in their subdivision for highways without receiving any compensation for them, as based on the regional plan and community plan
What is the obligation for proposed roadways bordering subdivisions?
the developer is obligated to provide land for 1/2 of the highway allowance for construction of the proposed roadway
What is the road way dedication for each type of road?
local -> 18 m
collector -> 20 m
arterial -> 24 m
major -> 27 m
What other land dedications must be considered?
-Land dedication is needed at intersections for vehicle turning
-also needed for transformers, traffic lights, etc
How are sidewalks used in municipal planning?
-one side for local
-both sides for collectors
What is the purpose of curb extensions like neckdowns and chokers?
-these help slow traffic, reduce crossing distance, and improve visibility for pedestrians
what is the purpose of the angled crosswalk?
-these force pedestrians to look in the direction of oncoming traffic
what is a median refuge?
a median refuge provides added protection for pedestrians on wide streets
Are sidewalks used in cul de sacs?
-normally cul de sacs don’t need sidewalks unless it leads to a public area such as a park, school, or trail
-for long blocks (200 to 300 m) add parkway at mid block
also add midblock crossing for convenience of pedestrians

pedestrians

what are the 3 major types of multi-user trails?
destination trails -> stanley park, lafarge lake
linking trails -> guildford ave between lafarge lake
nature trails -> buntzen lake, minnekoda

What are Destination Trails?
Destination trails emphasize recreational experience in a natural open space or park like setting.
-located within a green way, natural area, parkway, or designated trail corridor
-accommodates walkers, cyclists, and in line skaters
What are linking trails?
-emphasize safe travel for pedestrians to and from parks and around the community
-located within road right of ways or utility easements, but can be through parkland
what are nature trails?
-located in greenways or natural resource based parks
-in open spaces where experiencing nature is the primary objective,
-provides a place for exercise and quiet space
-typically unpaved
