On Street Bikeways Flashcards
What is the purpose of a bikeway in municipal engineering?
-promote healthy living and allow residents to cut down on driving
-having bikeways increases property values
What are the 3 types of bikeways?
-bike lane, found along urban road sections where maneuvering space is limited and a defined lane is needed for rider safety
-bike route/shoulder bikeway, constructed along rural road sections with no curb and gutter
-sign shared road way, cyclists & motorists share the right hand travel lane
What are the main properties of a Bike Lane??
-motorists travel beside the bike lane in their own lane, with clearly marked separation between them
-there is no conflict between the two separate lanes EXCEPT intersections where the motorists may be making a left turn
-suitable for novice cyclists
-1.2 to 1.8 metres wide
-located along collector roads and minor arterial
What are the properties of bike routes/shoulder bikeways?
-located along the shoulder of a rural road
-width of the shoulder is sufficient to accommodate cyclists
What are the properties of sign shared roadways?
-cyclists and motorists share the right hand travel lane
-challenging for novice cyclists
-only on local streets with low traffic volume
-sometimes located near tourist attractions, where cycling signs include directions to the attractions
What is one special type of sign shared roadway?
-the “bicycle boulevard”, where traffic circles are built into the intersection to slow down motorists, making the shared roadway safer for cyclists
What is a Community Plan?
-each municipality has a current community plan
-developed by the city planning department, which is authorized by the provincial statute/local government act
-public input is considered when the community plan is updated periodically
-community plan is updated every 5 years
What is the pre-application step in the subdivision approval process?
-highly recommended
-it is an informal discussion with the city planning dept about your
proposed subdivision so that the city can give you useful feedback
-this step can save your client money and time
-if your proposed subdivision looks affordable the city would give you a
preliminary approval to proceed with the design of the subdivision in
about 3 or 4 months
