Serotonin Flashcards
Involved in:
Food intake, sexual behaviour, pain, anxiety, learning, memory, mood, sleep, cognition
Synthesis pathway
Tryptophan converted into 5-HTP by tryptophan hydroxylase (rate limiting step), 5-HTP converted to 5-HT by aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase
Tryptophan hydroxylase
2 forms, 1+2. 1=non neuronal cells 2= neurons
Use immunohistocytochemistry to locate serotonergic neurons
Parachlorophenylalanine
Inhibits TH 1+2; blocks 5-HT synthesis
Reserpine
Inhibits VMAT2 transporters
Fenfluramine
Release 5-HT from neurons
MDMA
Release 5-HT from neuron
SSRI
Inhibits reuptake of serotonin (selective)
Cocaine
Inhibits reuptake of serotonin and NE
Monoamine oxidase
Breaks down 5-HT
5-HIAA
5-HT metabolite; Low concentrations in CSF associated with suicidal behaviour
Buspirone
Agonist of 5-HTR1a, decreases food intake and anxiety
Locations
Gut, CNS
