sudden single hot, swollen, tender joint with restricted movement
can have fever or no fever

A
haematogenous spread (URTI/LRTI, STI)
extension of local infection (osteomyelitis invasion)
direct inoculation (needle in surgery, trauma)

urgent joint aspiration -> gm stain and culture
bloods + exclude gout
