Biopsychosocial model
Interplay of biological, psychological and social factors
Drug
A substance that alters structure or function of an organism via its chemical nature
Psychoactive drug
A drug that specifically effects thoughts, emotions or behaviours
Drugs are grouped in different ways:
1.) Chemical family/origin
2.) Legality
3.) Perceived risk/harm
4.) Intended use
5.) Effects
Drug misuse
Use in greater amounts than prescribed by a doctor or for purposes other than those intended by the manufacturer
Drug abuse
Use in a manner, amount or in situations such that it causes social, occupational, psychological or physical problems
Addiction
A chronic, relapsing condition characterized by compulsive drug seeking and abuse
Substance use disorders
A clinically defined, pathological pattern of behaviours related to substance use
Substance use disorders (criteria)
- Impaired control of drug use
- Impairment in social functioning resulting from use
- Risky use
- Pharmacological changes such as tolerance or withdrawal
