Tolerance and withdrawal
Tolerance
Decreased reaction to drug from repeated use
Withdrawal symptoms
Abnormal physical or psychological effects of stopping the use of a drug
- Sweating
- Tremors
- GI upset
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
Dependence
A state in which an individual uses a drug so frequently or consistently that it would be difficult for the person to stop
Physical dependence
Defined by the presence of withdrawal symptoms or syndrome
Psychological dependence
Defined by a high rate of drug use, craving or drug seeking behaviour, emotional/motivational withdrawal symptoms
Reinforcement
Refers to a process by which the consequences of a behaviour result in an increased tendency to repeat that behaviour
Feelings of pleasure/euphoria
Positive reinforcement
Relief from withdrawal or psychological distress
Negative reinforcement
Toxicity
Refers to a drug’s association with toxic effects
ie. effects that produce dangerous or potentially dangerous consequences
Acute toxicity
Toxicity from the drug’s presence/action
Chronic toxicity
Toxicity from long-term use of drug
Behavioural toxicity
Toxicity from a drug’s behavioural effects
Physiological toxicity
Toxicity from a drug’s physiological effects
