A

Secondary infection of septal hematoma
Follows furuncle of the nose or upper lip
May follow acute infections like typhoid or measles

What are the clinical features of a nasal septal abscess?

A

Severe bilateral nasal obstruction
Pain and tenderness over the bridge of the nose
Fever with chills and frontal headache
Red, swollen skin over the nose
Smooth bilateral swelling of the nasal septum
Fluctuation in the swelling
Congested septal mucosa
Enlarged, tender submandibular lymph nodes

Q

What is the treatment for a nasal septal abscess?

A

Drain abscess as early as possible
Incision in the most dependent part
Excise a piece of septal mucosa
Remove pus and necrosed cartilage by suction
Reopen incision daily for 2–3 days if needed
Start systemic antibiotics immediately and continue for at least 10 days

A

Necrosis of septal cartilage causing depression of the cartilaginous dorsum
Septal perforation from necrosis of septal flaps
Rare but serious complications: meningitis and cavernous sinus thrombosis
