SEPSIS criteria Flashcards
What criteria was previously used to determine the likelihood of SEPSIS?
Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS)
What elements are part of the SIRS criteria?
Temperature (<36/>38)
Heart Rate >90bpm
Resp Rate >20
WBC count <4000/>12000
Where is the true SOFA criteria most often used?
ICU
as many primary care centres or emergency situations don’t have the tools to complete the full assessment
What are the 3 components of the Quick SOFA criteria?
qSOFA
- RR >22
- systolic BP <100
- Altered Glasgow Coma Scale (<14 which is around normal)
A score of 2 or more on the qSOFA scale indicates what risk of mortality due to SEPSIS?
> 10%
SEPSIS can be suspected if the history is suggestive and the patient’s NEWS score is >5. TRUE/FALSE?
TRUE
Organ dysfunction is always related to infection. TRUE/FALSE?
FALSE
e.g. pancreatitis has inflammation with no infection and can cause multi-organ failure
What is meant by the Number needed to Treat (NNT)?
The number of people who need to be treated with the drug for it to start having an effect and decreasing mortality rates
