Sepsis Flashcards
What is sepsis?
Sepsis is a life threatening condition
The body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs with the immune system becoming dysregulated. This causes organ dysfunction.
What is neutropenic sepsis?
A potentially life threatening complication of neutropenia, defined by a temperature higher than 38C and a high or low neutrophil count.
What are some causes of neutropenic sepsis?
Cytotoxic chemotherapy
Infections
Stem cell transplant
Bone marrow disorders
Immunosuppressive drugs
Nutritional deficiencies.
What is aneuric?
The kidneys fail to produce or release urine, leading to build up of waste products causing electrolyte imbalance, fluid overload and serious compilations.
WITHHOLDING URINE!
Name nursing assessments for neutropenic sepsis?
History checking.
Check for signs of infection.
Presence of venous access device (CV.LINE).
Undertake physiological assessment for baseline treatment.
Head to toe skin assessment for rashes or wounds.
Name Nursing management for neutropenic sepsis?
Give oxygen therapy
Urinalysis / urine dip
Administer broad spectrum antibiotics
Take swabs.
X-ray (collection of infection)
Monitor urine input and output
Escalate to clinican
Take blood test for microbiology
SEPSIS SIX
What exposure causes neutropenic sepsis?
Gram positive bacteria
How would nurse support patient education on discharge?
Need to adhere to medication plan
Self monitor symptoms like temperature and do they have access/ equipment such as thermometer.
Provide sepsis advice if symptoms
Infection prevention / hygiene guidance to avoid infections.
Nursing management for sepsis using BUFALO?
BLOOD CULTURES
URINE OUTPUT
FLUIDS
ANTIBIOTCS
LACTATE
OXYGEN
Why are infants more prone to sepsis?
They have underdeveloped immune system.
