Seperation Techniques Flashcards
Filtration
Seperation of an undissolved solid from from a mixture of the solid and liquid/solution
Crystallisation
Seperation of a dissolved solid from a solution
Simple distillation
separate a liquid and a soluble solid from a solution
fractional distillation
Separate a mixture with 2 or more elements into fractions
What is paper chromatography
Its a method of separating dissolved chemical substances by their different migration rates across sheets of paper.
How does paper chromatography work?
It’s carried out on paper, a spot of the mixture is placed near the bottom of a piece of chromatography paper. The paper is then placed upright in a suitable solvent, such as water. As the solvent soaks up the paper it carries the mixture with it.
