Allotropes Of Carbon Flashcards
Properties of diamond
Does not conduct
High melting point
Very hard
What is diamond used for?
Useful when extremely tough metal is required because all the outer shells in carbon are held in four covalent bonds around each carbon atom, a giant lattice structure requires a large amount of energy to break.
What is a fullerene?
A group of carbon allotropes which consist of molecules that form hollow tubes or spheres.
Properties of a Buckminster fullerene?
Low melting and boiling point
Semi-conductor
Yellow solid
Very light and strong
The first fullerene discovered?
Buckminster
Properties of Graphite
Conducts electricity because free electrons formed from carbon atoms joined to the three layers of hexagons migrate along layers carrying charge.
Soft and slippery because layers are attracted by weak intermolecular forces so layers slide over each other.
Where is graphite used?
In pencils and as an industrial lubricant.
Graphene structure
Consists of a single layer of granite which is a sheet of carbon atoms covalently bonded forming a continuous hexagonal layer.
Where is Graphene used?
Fabricate composite materials and in electronics.
Properties of graphene
2D because its one atom thick
Extremely strong but light
Thermal and electrical conductors
Flexible and transparent
