Seperation Methods Flashcards
What is filtration?
Filtration is a process used to separate solids from liquids or gases using a filter that allows the fluid to pass through but not the solid.
What is evaporation?
The method involves heating the mixture until the liquid evaporates completely, leaving behind the solid residue.
What is sublimation?
Sublimation is used for a solid and solid mixture where one of the components converts from solid state to gaseous state without forming liquid upon heating, leaving behind the other components that are non-sublimable.
What is simple distillation?
A method of separating a mixture of two liquids where one has a lower boiling point and when heated, that one turns into vapour and passes through a condenser where the gas cools back into a liquid
What is fractional distillation?
Fractional distillation is a process by which components in a chemical mixture are separated into different parts according to their different boiling points.
What is paper chromatography?
It is used to separate several solutes usually coloured and travel through absorbent paper at different speeds. A pure substance produces one spot and an impure one produces two or more spots.
