Periodic Table Flashcards
Where are groups in the periodic table?
Vertically. Up to down.
Where are periods in the periodic table?
Horizontally, side to side.
How many electrons in the outer shell
does an element in group one have?
Only one.
What is the periodic table?
An arrangement of the elements based on their atomic number
What increases each period?
As the group goes down progressively, you add the group number to 2 starting from the second period, then you add 8. Each time you go down.
If I asked for the electronic configuration of an element in oeriod 2 group 3 what would it be?
2.3
If I asked for the electronic configuration of an element in period 3 group two, what is it?
2.8.2
What are groups 1,2,3?
Metals (except hydrogen and boron)
What are groups 4-8?
Non metals
What are group 1 elements called?
Alkali metals
What are group 2 elements called?
Alkaline earth metals
What are group 7 elements called?
Halogens
What are group 8 (or 0) elements called?
Noble gases
Why do elements in a group have similar chemical properties?
Because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shells
What happens in reactivity going down the group for metals?
It increases.
