Separation Techniques Flashcards
List the separation techniques you’ve learnt
- magnetic attraction,
- filtration,
- evaporation,
- distillation,
- paper chromatography
State some examples of the applications of the various separation techniques in everyday life and industries.
- Water treatment
(i.e. distillation or *reverse osmosis of sea water in desalination plants, and filtration and *reverse osmosis of treated used water) - food safety
- waste management
What does magnetic attraction separate?
It separates magnetic substances from non-magnetic substances
What does filtration separate?
It separates non-soluble substances from a solvent.
(eg iron fillings in water)
What does evaporation separate?
It separates soluble solute from its solvent upon cooling down after evaporation.
(eg salt from salt water)
What does simple distillation separate?
It separates solvents with different boiling points!
- solvent w the lowest BP will boil off and distill first, and so on
(water, oil, etc)
What does paper chromatography separate?
Separate mixtures of coloured compounds (eg dyes, or drugs in urine tests etc)
