Atoms and Molecules Flashcards
What is an element
Elements are the basic building blocks of non-living and living matter
What is a compound?
Compounds are substances consisting of two or more chemically combined elements
Do compounds have the same characteristics as their constituents elements?
No!
What is a mixture?
Mixtures are made up of two or more elements and/or compounds that are not chemically combined
What is a solute?
A solute is the substance that dissolves in a solvent.
(eg coffee powder dissolved in water)
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a substance that a solute dissolves in.
What is a solution?
A solution is made when a solute is completely dissolved in its solvent.
Solutions and suspension are mixtures. T/F?
True !
What is difference between suspension and solution?
Suspension is when a solute does not completely dissolve in its solvent, leaving residues upon filtration.
What are the factors affecting rate of dissolving?
- Rate of stirring
- Temperature of solvent
- Size of particle
What are the components of an atom?
- Proton
- Neutron
- Electron
What is in the nucleus of an atom?
Protons and Neutrons
Nucleon number (aka mass number) =
Proton number + Neutron number
What are the charges of proton, nucleon and electron
+1, 0 , -1 in the same order
In an atom, does the number of proton = number of electrons? Hence, is an atom electrically neutral or not?
YES! in atoms, proton no. = electron no
