Matter Flashcards
Describe the arrangement and movement of particles in solids.
Particles are closely packed in an orderly manner.
They vibrate about their fixed positions.
What is matter made of?
It is made up of small discrete
particles in constant and random motion.
Then it arranges into solid, liquid and gas.
Describe the arrangement and movement of particles in liquids.
Particles are closely packed in a disorderly manner.
They move randomly and slide past each other.
Describe the arrangement and movement of particles in gases.
Particles are far apart and are disorderly.
They move randomly and quickly
What is diffusion?
Net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
What happens to particles when a solid substance is heated?
Its particles GAIN ENERGY, and vibrate MORE VIGOROUSLY about their fixed positions
Hence, the distances between the particles increase
Causing Volume of substance to increase –> substance expands
What happens to particles when a solid substance is cooled?
Its particles LOSE ENERGY, and vibrate LESS vigorously about their fixed positions
Distance btwn particles decreases –> vol decreases
Hence substance contracts
