Cells Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the basic building blocks of life
What are the functions of the nucleus?
- Centre that controls all activities that occur within a cell
- Contains DNA, which is genetic material, that can be passed down to the next generation
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It is the jelly-like substance where most chemical reactions take place
What are is function of the Cell Membrane?
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cells
In a plant cell, is the cell membrane below or covering the cell wall?
In a plant cell, the cell membrane is the layer below the cell wall
What is a vacuole?
It is a space within the cell
What is the function of vacuoles?
It stores liquids, food and waste materials
What is the difference between vacuoles in animal cells and in plant cells?
In animal cells, the vacuoles are SMALL AND NUMEROUS, while in plant cells, the vacuoles are LARGE AND FEW
What are the functions of the cell wall?
- Protects and supports the entire cell
- Allows substances to move into and out of the cell
What is the function of chloroplast?
- “Food factory” in a plant cell
- Allows photosynthesis to take place
What are the differences between plant and animal cells?
- P has cell wall ; A has no cell wall
- P may have chloroplasts ; A has no chloroplasts
- P has 1/2 large vacuoles in the middle of the cell ; A has numerous small vacuoles
How are cells organised in a multicellular organism?
Cell –> Tissue –> Organ –> Organ System –> Organism
