Separation Methods Flashcards
What do distillation separate
A Liquid from a solution
What’s the problem with simple distillation
You can only use it to separate things with very different boiling points
What equipment do you need for simple distillation
Condenser, rubber tubing, distillation flask, beaker
Step one of simple distillation to get pure water from seawater
Pour your sample of seawater into the distillation flask
Step 2 simple distillation
Set up apparatus. Connect the bottom end of the condenser to a cold tap using rubber tubing. Run cold water through the condenser to keep it cool
Step 3 of simple distillation
Gradually heat the distillation flask. The part of the solution that has the lowest bp will evaporate
Step 4 simple distillation
The water vapour passes into the condenser where it cools and condenses, it then flows back into the beaker where it is collected
Step 5 simple distillation
Eventually you’ll just end up with salt
What does fractional distillation separate
A mixture of liquids
What does filtration separate
An insoluble solid from a liquid
What does crystallisation separate
A soluble solid from a solid
What are the 2 phases in chromatography
Mobile and stationary
What is the mobile phase in chromatography
When molecules can’t move. Solid or really thick liquid
