Separating techniques Flashcards
What are mixtures?
Mixtures are made up of substances
Why is it good to separate mixtures?
To get their elements
What is the difference between solution and solubility?
A solution is a mixture of a solid, liquid or gas. All parts of the mixture are the same. You can’t see the separate substances
Name some separation techniques
Magnet, condensing boiling and filtering
What would you use to separate something with iron?
A magnet
How can you decide the right separation technique to use?
Look at the properties of the things that you are separating
You can set up equipment by:
Looking at the other investigation and use them aswell
What is a solute?
The liquid in which the solvent dissolves into
What is a soluble?
Something that can be dissolved
What does insoluble mean?
Something that can’t be dissolved
What does saturated mean?
The mixture can’t dissolve anymore
What does solubility mean?
How much solvent can be dissolved
How do you make solution?
You mix solute and solvent together
How do you get salt back?
By boiling the water
Why will more solute dissolve at a higher temperature?
Because the particles vibrate more so they dissolve more effectively
What is simple distillation used for?
It is used to extract one substance from a mixture with 2
What is a pure substance?
A substance made up of one type of atom
What molecule is pure water made of?
2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom
What is fractional distillation and how does it work?
It’s the technique used to extract different substances from a compound made of different things
Is salt a mixture, element or compound
Compound
Is seawater a compound, mixture or element?
Mixture
What is the independent variable?
The variable that we change
What is the control variable?
The thing that stays the same
What is the dependant variable?
The variable that depends on the independent variable
