Separating metals Flashcards
What is oxidation (metals)
Gaining oxygen
What is reduction (metals)
Loss of oxygen
How are metals separated using carbon
If the metal is less reactive than carbon, carbon will displace the metal from its compound
What is the reactivity series
Group 1
Group 2
Group 3
Carbon
Transition metals
Copper
Backwards L
What is oxygenation (electrons)
Losing electrons
What is reduction (electrons)
Gaining electrons
What is electrolysis
Separation of metals into the original atoms using electricity
Why can solids not undergo electrolysis
In a solid the metal can not separate into its ions and then atoms
They are in fixed positions and cannot move
Explain the steps of electrolysis
An electric current will pass through the electrolyte (molton or dissolved) and the ions will move to the corresponding electrode (cathode or anode)
The positive ions will move to the cathode and the negative ions will move to the anode
Products at the anode (solution)
Halide ions
Or Oxygen
Products at the cathode (solution)
Less reactive than hydrogen
Or hydrogen
