Exo- and endothermic reactions Flashcards
What is an endothermic reaction
A reaction that absorbs energy from the surroundings so the temperature falls
Examples of an endothermic reaction
Sports injury pack
What is an exothermic reaction
A reaction that releases energy to the surroundings so the temperature increases
Examples of an exothermic reaction
Handwarmers
Self heating cans
Combustion
Respiration
Practical for measuring energy changes
Using a polystyrene cup, place 10ml of acid into the cup, which is suspended in a glass beaker (to prevent measuring the outside temperature)
Measure the initial temperature of the acid
Add 5g of alkali to the cup, using a lid to prevent heat loss, and measure the change in temperature using a thermometer
Calculate the temperature change using the initial temperature and change in temperature
What is breaking bonds
Endothermic
What is forming bonds
Exothermic
