Simple Sentences
Single clause that consists of a subjects and a predicate
“ I like apples.”
Compound Sentences
Consists of two or more independent clauses ( simple sentences ) that are joined together using a coordinator ( FANBOYS)
“ I like apples but I love pomegranate “
Complex Sentences
Consists of one independent clauses ( simple sentences ) and at least one dependent clause joined using a subordinator ( after - before - because )
“ I like apples because they are tasty.”
Compound - Complex Sentences
Combination of compound sentences and complex sentence. These contain at least two independent clauses that have been joined by a coordinator and at least one dependent clause that’s been joined by a subordinator.
“ I like apple but I love pomegranate because they are delicious.”
Sentence fragments
Incomplete sentences - missing either the subject or the predicate- however still makes senses.
“ Not great” “ got to go”
Declarative Sentences
Function to provide information, observation or statements. eg are the most common in english. “ I want to be a lawyer.”
Imperative Sentences
Gives a direct order or instruction. begin with a verb - may include a politeness marker,
“ Please sit down .”
Interrogatives Sentences
Pose a question. This type of sentence often begin with, who, what, where, when, why, how, or do and it ends with a question mark.
“ Do you like the meal ?”
Exclamatives Sentences
Is a sentence that expresses high levels of emotions such as excitement, surprise or happiness and angry - end with !
“ I got 100%, on my essay “
