6
Q

How do we see?

A

Light enters eye through cornea, passes the lens, reflects on retina and carries info to the brain by optic nerve

16
Q

Temporary hearing impairment definition

A

Loss of hearing from buildup of ceruman (wax), fixed with removing wax

17
Q

Glaucoma definition

A

Increased pressure to eye (optic nerve damage), causes tunnel vision, blurred vision, halos around lights

18
Q

Cataracts definition

A

Lens becomes cloudy, blurring and dimming vision, difficulty seeing at night and sensitivity to light

19
Q

Age related macular degradation definition

A

Macula (central part of retina) breaks down, loss of sharp/central vision, may retain some peripheral vision, gradual or sudden

20
Q

Conjunctivitis or pink eye definition

A

Inflammation of clear membrane covering white part and lining of eyelid, redness shown in eye, increased discharge and tears, from bacteria or allergies

21
Q

Presbyopia definition

A

Gradual inability to focus on close objects
Natural lens is less flexible

22
Q

Diabetic retinopathy definition

A

Usually from type 1
Damage to blood vessels (blood leaks) and the new blood makes scar tissue over retina

23
Q

aphesia definition

A

partial/complete loss of speech/language skills from brain injury

24
Q

apraxia definition

A

aka verbal apraxia, inability to correctly move speaking muscles, usually from brain injury

25
Q

dysarthia definition

A

difficulty speaking from weakness/paralysis in speaking muscles

26
Q

How do we hear?

A

Air vibrations transmitted through the outer ear to inner ear are processed as sound, the cochlea carries sound waves through fluid

27
Q

receptive aphasia definition

A

difficulty understanding language, both written and spoken, cannot understand their own words or others, speech comes out muddled

28
Q

expressive aphasia definition

A

difficulty speaking or writing, can understand spoken or written words but their speech or writing is jumbled

29
Q

expressive receptive aphasia definition

A

aka global aphasia, difficulty speaking and understanding writing and speech, may only be able to say yes and no

30
Q

sensory changes with aging

A

decrease in vision and hearing
decrease in taste, smell, and touch
sensitivity to pain is reduced
