Sensory Perception Flashcards
External stimuli
Visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, and gustatory.
The process of receiving stimuli or data. The stimuli are either external or internal to the body.
Sensory perception
Internal stimuli
Gustatory, kinesthetic, and visceral stimuli
Awareness of the position and movement of body parts
For example, an individual walking is aware of which leg is forward
This is kinesthetic stimuli
The ability to perceive and understand an object through touch by its size, shape, and texture
Stereognosis
For example, an individual holding a tennis ball is aware of its size, found shape, and soft surface without seeing it.
____________ means of or relating to any large organ within the body. These organs may produce stimuli that make an individual aware of them, for example, a full stomach.
Visceral
An agent or act that stimulates a nerve receptors
Stimulus
A feeling of rotation or imbalance
Vertigo
A lack of meaningful stimuli; reduced amount of incoming stimuli because of either decreased environmental stimuli or impairment in one or more of client senses; can lead to disorientation overtime
Sensory deprivation
An increase in intensity of stimuli to levels beyond normal; generally occurs when client is unable to process amount or intensity of stimuli or when exposed to numerous stimuli that are not meaningful
Sensory overload
