Sensory issues Flashcards
What is the anterolateral/spinothalamic tract responsible for?
Pain and temperature
What is the dorsal column-medial lemniscal responsible for?
Fine touch, 2-point dicrimination, vibration, conscious proprioception
What is the reason for altered sensation?
If limited past sensory experience, the input may be interpreted as noxious
What are the 4 patterns of sensory processing?
- Low registration (high, passive)
- Sensory avoiding (low, active)
- Sensory seeking (high, active)
- Sensory sensitivity (low, passive)
Sensory processing
Explain low registration (high, passive)
Need more input for a response
Sensory processing
Explain sensory avoiding (low, active)
Limits self from trying new things
Sensory processing
Explain sensory seeking (high, active)
Look for sources of various types of stimuli - bumping, crashing, running
Sensory processing
Explain sensory sensitivity (Low, Passive)
Have trouble in crowded rooms or with levels of stim other people find tolerable
What can PTs do for patients with sensory processing issues?
- Quieter voice or bold voice depending on type
- Low distraction environment
- Activities involving awakening vs. quieting, breathing, mindfulness
- Sensory integration
Examples of proprioceptive sensory diet
- Jumping
- Running
- Bouncing on ball
- Pushing heavy objects
- Weightlifting
- Reassuring pressure - firm touch
- Squish
Examples of tactile sensory diet
- Desensitization
- Dry to wet
- Smooth to rough
- Self placed first
- Put hand/foot onto items -> cover hand/foot with items -> move hand/foot through items
Examples of vestibular sensory diet
- Rocking
- Swing
- Spin
- Roll
What is tactile defensiveness?
- Avoids certain clothing
- Avoids contact with others
- Does not enjoy hugs, bathtime, haircuts, face washing, dental care
- Does not like messy play
- Dislikes light touch
What does sensory dyspraxia affect?
- Hand-eye coordination
- Spatial awareness
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Processing information
- Sensory overload
- Organization
- Memory
- Time keeping
Common impairments of ASD
- Vestibular processing
- Auditory processing
- Hyper-sensitivity to lights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch
- Hypo-sensitivity to pain and proprioception -leading to clumsiness
