Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) Flashcards
1
Q
DSM-5’s 4 criteria for DCD
A
- Learning and execution of coordinated motor skills is below age level
- Motor difficulties significantly interfere w/ ADL’s, academics, leisure, and play
- Oneset is in the early developmental period
- Motor coordination difficulties are not better explained by intellectual delay, visual impairment, or other neurological conditions that affect movement
2
Q
Co-existing conditions with DCD
A
- ASD
- ADHD
- Learning disabilities
- Sensory differences
- Intellectual disability
- Psychological/mental health conditions
3
Q
Characteristics of DCD
A
- Differences in brain function
- Gross motor skill delay
- ADL limitations
- School and social challenges
- Communication issues
4
Q
Functional consequences of DCD
A
- Poor fitness
- Obesity
- Decreased physical activity
- Poor self-esteem and self-worth
- Emotional and behavioral problems
- Impaired academic achievement
- At risk for being bullied
5
Q
What comprises a PT exam for a patient with DCD?
A
- History and SR
- Make appropriate referrals if red flags present
- Complete participation outcome measures
- Examine motor performance through movement analysis/observation
- Examine activity limitations using questionnaires (DCDQ’07, MABC-2)
- Examine motor performance using standardized measures (BOT-2, MABC-2)
- Examine impairments of body functions and structures
6
Q
What does the movement assessment battery for children (MABC-2) test for?
A
8 items in 3 domains:
* Manual dexterity
* Aiming and catching
* Balance
7
Q
What comprises PT intervention for a patient with DCD?
A
- Provide task-oriented interventions with related body functions and structures interventions as the first-choice
- Use small group or individual sessions
- Recommend supplemental activities to augment the first-choice intervention
- Provide education and HEPs to the family
- Provide appropriate dosages for interventions to improve motor performance (high frequency)
8
Q
What is motor skill training (MST)?
A
- Active participation in solving problems inherent of the functional task
- Practice across multiple environmental conditions
- Task specific practice with multiple repetitions
9
Q
What is Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP)?
A
- Meta-cognitive strategy in solving problems inherent of the functional task
- Progressive increase of task demands across multiple
environmental conditions
