Sensory integration with spine dysfunction Flashcards
sensory integration
the ability for the brain to organize, interpret and use sensory information
somatosensation
refers to sensation received from the skin and musculoskeletal system
examination of sensory function involves
testing the pts ability to interpret and discriminate among sensory information
what are pain and temperature carried by
- small unmylinated fibers
- carried on the spinothalamic tract
- crosses over at the spinal cord
-exteroreceptors
what are vibration and proprioception carried by
-large myelinated fibers
-carried on the dorsal columns
- ascend on the same side of the spinal cord
- crosses over in the brain stem
-proprioceptors in joints, muscles, and ligaments
combined cortical sensations
- stereognosis
- barognosis
- 2-pont discrimination
- recognition of texture
normal sensation
pt is able to detect pain, vibration, and joint position
how can localization of problems with the nervous system be detected
by knowing the area of the skin supplied by the peripheral nerves, sensory dermatomes, decussation of the spinothalamic tract and dorsal columns
peripheral neuropathy
- loss of sensation starts distally and moves proximally
- toes and feet will be affected before fingres and hands
- glove and stocking pattern
- common with diabetic patients
sporadic sensory loss
systemic pathology can produce unpredicatble or scattered patterns of sensory loss ex. MS
