Intro to Taping Flashcards
1
Q
What are the different types of tape
A
- Leukotape
- athletic tape
- Kinesio/rock tape
2
Q
Athletic Tape
A
- used by PTs and ATCs
- purpose is to provide support
- flexible, cloth tape (stiffer then cloth tape)
- easily torn
- not elastic
3
Q
why would you apply athletic tape
A
it improve joint stability
(planterfaciatis, ankle stability)
4
Q
Leukotape
A
- rigid, cloth tape
- required scissors to cut
- purpose is to provide support and positioning
- Used in McConnel Taping
5
Q
McConnell Tape
A
- tape applications designed to unload soft tisse
- Research on patellofemoral shoulder and lumbar pathology
6
Q
Kinesiotape/ Rock tape
A
- elastic, flexible tape
- designed to assist in healing traumatized tissues (facilitate or inhibit muscular activity)
- rock tape a bit sterdier than kinesiotape
7
Q
Rock Tape
A
- “knock off” kinesiotape
- developer couldn’t buy kinesiotape without getting certified
- modified kinesiotape formula and started his own company
- doesnt matter which direction you put the tape on
8
Q
purpose of kinesio/rock tape
A
- pain mitigation
- neurosensory input
- decompression
9
Q
Skin brain connection
A
- skin is largest organ in your body
- developed via ectoderm layer (same as muscles, fascia, ect.)
10
Q
Hiltons law
A
the same trunks of nerves whose branches supply the groups of muscles moving a joint furnish also a distribution of nerves to the skin over the insertions of the same muscles
11
Q
pain mitigation
A
- sensory input = motor output
- quick changes in function are a result of the neuological system
12
Q
decompression with taping
A
- fascia has 9-10 times mechanoreceptors of other tissue
- mobilization of the skin and fascia affects the nervous system (not a huge difference between athletic and KT tape)
13
Q
pre cautions of taping
A
- history of tape irritation
- not experience with tape (make sure to educate)
- blood thinners
- hormone cycle
- lighter/ ginger skin types
14
Q
contraindications of taping
A
- open wounds
- active infection
- active cancer site
- kidney/ heart congestion
- overstretch of tape ends
- history of skin reactions (people might be allergic to tape
15
Q
benefits of kines/rock tape
A
used for increased lymph drainage, muscle inhibition or facilitation
