Sensation vs. Perception Flashcards
Sensation
PNS
Perception
CNS
Ganglia
Collections of neuronal cell bodies found outside the CNS
Once stimulus is received from sensory receptors or nerve endings the electrochemical energy is sent along neural pathways to various projection areas in the brain
List the sensory receptors

What are the three main types of thresholds?
absolute, conscious perception, difference
Absolute threshold
The minimum stimulus energy that is needed to activate a sensory system
Threshold of conscious perception
The level of intensity that a stimulus must pass in order to be consciously perceived by the brain
Subliminal perception
Information received by the CNS but does not cross the ToCP
Difference threshold
The minimum change in the magnitude required for an observer to perceive that two diff stimuli are in fact different
Webers Law
(initial - final) / initial
Signal detection theory
internal and external factors influence thresholds
Basic signal detection experiment
Noise trial
Catch trial
Hit ~> yes, signal present
Miss ~> no, signal present
False alarm ~> yes, no signal
Correct neg ~> no, no signal
