Prenatal Dev Flashcards
Steps of prenatal development (brief)
1) Neurulation
2) Cell migration
3) Neural tube forms embryonic brain
Neurulation step 1
Ectoderm overlying the notochord begins to furrow forming a neural groove surrounded by two neural folds
Cell migration step 2
Cells at the leading edge of the neural fold are called the neural crest, and will migrate throughout the body to form disparate tissues like DRG melanocytes and calcitonin producers
Neural tube step 3
Remainder of furrow closes to form the neural tube which will form CNS
What does the alar plate of the neural tube differentiate into?
Sensory neurons
What does the basal plate of the neural tube differentiate into?
Motor neurons
How does the neural tube form the brain?
Invaginates and folds many times
3 swellings ~> pros, mes, rhombencephalon
5 swellings ~> telen, dien, mesen, meten, myelencephalon
How is the fetus attached to the mother?
Umbilical cord
Attached to uterine wall and placenta
Placenta
Transmits food, oxygen, and water to the fetus while returning water and waste to the mother
Maternal blood supplies many proteins and aa before the fetus can develop its own
What are some ways a baby can get fucked up?
- Virus and bacteria crossing placenta like rubella and chicken pox and herpes ~> cataracts deafness heart defects intellectual disability and other birth defects
- Thalidomide/antipileptics ~> malformations, neural tube fails to close completely leading to spina bifida or anencephaly
- malnutrition
- narcotics
