Sensation/Perception 1 - Transduction Flashcards
Does transduction relate to sensation or perception?
- sensory stimuli is turned into an action potential
- can happen without perception so it relates to sensation
Define sensation.
stimulation of a sense organ
What is the absolute threshold?
- when stimuli is detected 50% of the time
- other 50% are subliminal stimuli
What are subliminal stimuli?
when transduction occurs, but there is no conscious processing
What is the “just noticeable difference”? How does it relate to absolute threshold?
how much difference in a stimuli is required to detect a difference
- constant proportion
Define perception.
the organization of sensory stimuli into conscious experience
What is bottom up processing? Does it relate to sensation or perception?
- how sensory input builds perceptions
- physical process
- SENSATION
What is top-down processing? Does it relate to sensation or perception?
- how knowledge, experience, and thoughts influence interpretation
- psychological process
What is sensory adaptation?
perception dulls after long exposure to stimuli
What is inattentional blindness?
overlooking stimuli when attention is elsewhere
What is the signal detection theory?
the ability to detect a stimuli when it is embedded in a distracting background
