- when a person stops breathing for 10-20 sec during sleep
- loud grunts and snoring when sleeping
- can cause microsleeps

obstructive - problem with breathing mechanisms
central - disconnect between brain and longs

obstructive - lose weight
central - continuous positive airway device

- difficulty staying awake
- sleep attacks (30sec-30min)
- cataplexy: loss of muscle tone

- stimulants (amphetamines)

- motor signals are not inhibited

- association with neurodegenerative disorders
