Sensation And Perception Flashcards
Which are sensory receptors?
Eyes, ears, tongue, nose, skin
Perception
How the brain organizes information from our senses and translates it into something meaningful
Types of perception?
Photoreception, mechanoreception, chemoreception
Mechanoreception
Detection of pressure, vibration and movement. Perceived as touch, hearing, and equilibrium
Photoreception
Detection as light perceived as sight
Chemoreception
Detection of chemical stimuli, perceived as smell and taste
Bottom up processing
Sensory receptors register information about external environment and send it to brain for interpretation. Data driven. Starts at the bottom of upside down triangle.
What is sensation?
Process that activates sensory receptors and enables them to transmit signals to the brain
Top down processing
We start with a larger object or idea before working our way to detailed information. Theory driven. Starts at top of upside down triangle.
Gesalt’s principle
How we tend to organize visual elements into groups
- Similarity
Things that share visual characteristics such as shape size colour texture value or orientation will be grouped together.
- Proximity
When elements are placed close together, they’re seen as a group.
- Continuation
Occurs when the eye is compelled to move through one object and continue to another object
- Closure
Occurs when an object is incomplete or a space is not completely enclosed
- Figure ground
Tendency to perceive one aspect of an event as the figure or foreground, and the other as the ground or background. Think optical illusions.
