Pink’s motivation theory
Consists of Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose
Autonomy
Desire to be self directed
Mastery
Desire to improve/ get better. Challenge, then mastery
Purpose
To give meaning and do something for the greater good
Maslow’s heiarchy of needs
Physiological needs, safety needs, belonging needs, esteem needs, self actualization
- Physiological needs
Basic necessities. Food, water, air, sleep.
- Safety needs
Needs for safety and security. Employment, shelter, safe neighborhood.
- Belonging needs
Need for belonging, love and affection. Achieved through friendship, romance, families, social, community, and religious groups
Motivation
Defined as the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal oriented behavior
- Esteem needs
Become important after first three are met. Recognition from others and self esteem.
- Self actualization
Highest level. Become self aware, accepting and liking who you are, less concerned about opinions of others, and helping others
McClelland’s theory of motivation
Believes that each person has a dominant motivator. Achievement, Affiliation, or Power
Achievement
Strong need to set goals, takes risks, likes to receive feedback, likes working alone
Affiliation
Wants to belong to the group, and be liked. Favors collaboration over competition. Doesn’t like high risk
Power
Want to control and influence others, likes winning arguments. Enjoys competition and winning, as well as status and recognition.
