What are the five psychosexual stages of development?
- Oral stage

Describe the Oral Stage
Occurs from birth to one year old. Infant is dependent on care taker, trust is gained for oral stimulation
What is the conflict and fixation of the Oral Stage?
Conflict- Weaning process
Fixation- dependency, aggression, problems with drinking, eating, smoking, and nail biting
Describe the Anal Stage
Occurs from age 1-3, and the erogenous zone is the bowels and bladder.
What is the conflict and fixation of the Anal stage?
Conflict- Toilet training. Control of bladder/bowels= independence
Fixation- Anal retentive: individual is obsessive, rigid.
Anal expulsive: individual is messy, wasteful, destructive.
Describe the Phallic stage
It occurs from age 3-6, and the erogenous zone is the genitals.
What is the conflict and fixation of the Phallic Stage?
Conflict- children view same gender parent as rival for affection.
Fixation-
Male: Oedipus Complex- desires to replace father. Fear of retribution from father= Castration Anxiety.
Female: Electra Complex- desires to replace mother. Fear of retribution from mother= Penis Envy.
Describe the Latent Period
Sexual feelings are inactive due to development of Ego and Superego. Occurs 6 years-puberty. Individuals focus on peer relationships and hobbies. Develop social communications skills and self confidence
Describe the Genital stage
It’s the last and final stage, from puberty to death. Individuals develop sexual attraction, and concern for others increases. Goal of stage is to create balance in life.
What is Freud’s dream theory?
Freud stated that or dreams revealed our fears, desires and emotions in our unconscious mind.
Define “Displacement”
When the desire of one thing or purpose is symbolized by someone or something else.
Define “projection”
When a dreamer propels their own desires and wants onto another person
Define “symbolization”
This is characterized when the dreamer’s repressed urges or suppressed desires are acted out methaphorically
Define “condensation”
The process where the dreamer has hidden their feelings or urges so deeply in their unconscious mind that the meaning of their dream imagery may not be obvious
Define “rationalization”
The dreaming mind organizes an incoherent dream into a more understandable one. Also called “secondary revision”
