semiconductor diodes Flashcards
semiconductors are neither
conductors or insulators
the resistance of a semiconductor is
lower than the resistance of insulators and higher than the resistance of conductors
silicon is a semiconductor. it has 4 outer electrons. it forms a
stable crystal
pure silicon crystals are
insulators
in p-type silicon, the charge carriers are
holes
in p-type silicon, the holes move towards the
negative terminal
in n-type silicon, the charge carriers are
free electrons
in n-type silicon, the free electrons move towards the
positive terminal
to make p-type silicon, crystals are seeded with
aluminium atoms that have 3 outer electrons
to make n-type silicon, crystals are seeded with
phosphorus atoms that have 5 outer electrons
a diode is
a device that allows electrons to flow in 1 direction only
a p-n junction is a
diode
the arrow in the symbol for a diode points from
p-type to n-type
to make a diode conduct, you connect the
p-type to the postive and the n-type to the negative
in the arrow for the symbol of a diode, electrons flow in
the opposite direction to the arrow
