electrical supplies for electronic circuits Flashcards
step-down transformers have
fewer turns in the secondary coil than in the primary coil
equation between the primary and secondary voltages:
Vs = ns divided by np x Vp
the frequency of Vs is equal to
the mains frequency of 50Hz
the secondary voltage may be changed to any value by changing
the number of turns in the coils
the process of converting a.c. to d.c. is called
rectification
the part of a circuit that makes the change from a.c. to d.c. is called a
rectifier
diodes are the active components of
rectifiers
when the diode is on a positive terminal of a rectifier, it
conducts and there is a p.d. across the resistor
when the diode is on a negative terminal of a rectifier, it
doesn’t conduct and the p.d. across the resistor is 0
in a full wave rectifier, the output is
changing rapidly from 0 to its peak value and back to 0 all the time
in a half-wave rectifier, the output
voltage is 0 half the time, and for the rest of the time its changing rapidly from 0 to it’s peak values and back to 0
