A semivowel is a rapid vocalic glide on to a syllabic sound of greater duration. In English the semivowels /j/ and /w/ glide from positions of /i:/ and /u:/

When preceded by a voiceless consonant they become voiceless and fricative (cue, quick)

VOICED, BILABIAL, SEMIVOWEL, APPROXIMANT
It is articulated by raising the back of the tongue towards the soft palate and at the same time protruding the lips. The vocal cords vibrate. It is distributed in initial and medial positions, and can never appear in final positions.
