What are affricates?
A
Affricates are considered to be a combination of two consonant sounds of which the first is a plosive followed by a fricative sound.

Place of articulation
A
There are seven groups: /tθ/ /ts/ /dz/ /tʃ/ /dz/ /tr/ /dr/
What distinguishes them from other cons. sets is that the plosive element has a different tongue position than when pronounced in isolation.

Voicing
A
/tʃ/ is pronounced without vibration of the vocal cords - fortis sound. Shortens preceding vowels.
/dz/ is pronounced with vibration - lenis. Lengthens preceding vowels.
