Explain Alien and Sedition Acts-Know which states were involved.
In 1798, Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts with the support of the administration of President John Adams.
- The Alien Act granted the President unilateral authority to deport non-citizens who were subjects of foreign enemies.
- Congress passed the Sedition Act, which took direct aim at those who spoke out against the president (at the time, Adams) or the Federalist-dominated government.
- States involved: The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions were passed by the legislatures of their respective states in response to the Alien and Sedition Acts.

What is a Federalist?
A federalist is someone who supports a system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and various constituent units, such as states or provinces.

How did Great Britain increase control of the colonies?
Taxing all colonies for the war debt.
The British government fought a number of wars to protect and expand these colonies, and as a result they decided that the colonists would have to pay something for their own defence.

What was the Stamp Act?
This led to the introduction of the Stamp Act of 1765, which was an attempt to make the American colonists pay taxes that could be used to pay for the armed forces in North America.

Why were the colonists upset with the Stamp Act?
