Semen evaluation Flashcards
Three main measurements that are made during a semen evaluation:
-volume
-concentration
-motility
Normal pH of stallion semen
7.2-7.7
Normal color of sperm
-white to off-white
-sometimes more translucent
-can be affected by contamination from dirt/debris/urine
Why is morphology important?
the positive correlation between fertility and the percentage of physically normal sperm
-usually semen with more morphologically normal sperm have a higher fertility
Common defects in sperm morphology:
-abnormal head
-detached head
-broken neck
-abnormal midpiece
-proximal or distal droplet
-coiled or kinked tail
What is the purpose of the semen extender?
it overall helps sperm live longer by providing a source of nutrients and energy for it
-prevents sperm from becoming too concentrated because if that occurs the sperm can become acidic
What is the purpose of the filter in the collection bottle?
to remove or separate the gel portion of the semen and any contaminants such as dirt or debris
-it is needed to keep the sperm as healthy and viable as possible because if it is contaminated, it can affect the pH, motility, concentration, viability, etc.
Total sperm # =
volume (mL) * concentrations (millions/mL)
Total # PMS =
total # of sperm * progressively motility (%)
Missouri AV
versatile, easy to handle, not very heavy
-not much insulation though
Colorado AV
weighs a lot when filled but better insulated
-better in colder environments
-harder to use
