Q

Physical exam for fertility

A

volume should be 2-5mL. < or > is infertility.
color= should be grey/white
clarity= should be translucent. Increased turbidity= from WBC or spermatids
pH = 7.2-8. >8=infection. <8=increased prostate fluid

Q

Viscosity

A

<30 min after ejaculation. Should liquify after ejaculation by dropping from pipette. If it doesn’t liquify it must be done manually to continue with testing

Q

Morphology

A

shape is critical
Head=oval in shape w/acrosomal cap that allows sperm to enter egg
midpiece=sheath of mitochondria for tail movement
tail=long flagellum used to propel and direct sperm towards egg

16
Q

Decreased motility w/ normal count

A

viability test. Eosin-Nigrosin stain on dead cells

17
Q

Decreased count

A

fructose level. determines functional integrity of reproductive tract

18
Q

Decreased motility w/ clumping

A

male anti-sperm antibodies. Mixed agglutination reaction (MAR) or immunobead test

19
Q

Normal analysis w/ continued infertility

A

serum/cervical mucous is mixed w/ sperm. agglutination=pos

20
Q

Chemical testing

A

Neutral a-glucosidase. Decreased is epidimus disfunction

21
Q

Microbio testing

A

> 1 mill WBC’s is a prostate infection
gram stain and culture

22
Q

Other sperm function tests

A

hampster egg penetration, cervical mucous penetration, hypo-osmotic swelling, in-vitro acrosome reaction
