A

Synonym - words with the same meanings
Antonymy - words with opposite meanings
Hyponymy - words that sound the same
Idiom - non- literal expression - to kick the bucket
Denotation - dictionary meaning of a word - soldier
connotation - association, judgement linked to word
eg terrorist or freedom fighter
euphemisms - saying something in a soft subtle way - I was parted with my breakfast
Dysphemisms - I chucked up

Lexical choice & Semantic patterning

A

Irony- Language that shows the gap between what is said and what is meant, or saying the opposite of what is meant
Metaphor - comparison of something to something without saying like or as
Oxymoron- a word that combines a contradiction - love-hate connection
Simile- A figurative expression that involves a comparison between two things. In English, it is signalled by the words like or as; lips like rubies
Personification- A figure of speech that gives non-human (such as animals, ideas and things)human qualities (such as emotions)
Animation-
Puns- A type of wordplay that uses the different meaning of a word or brings together words that are similar in sound but have different meanings
