Semantic Patterning
Figurative language, irony, metaphor, simile, oxymoron, hyperbole, personification, animation, lexical ambiguity, and puns.
Figurative Language
Words and expressions that deviate from their literal meanings, to create a more vivid or expressive effect.
Irony
When a speaker says one thing but means another. This can be sarcasm, understatements, or backhanded compliments.
Metaphor
Using one semantic domain to explain a concept in a different domain.
Oxymoron
Contradictory words or phrases are used in combination for a contrasting effect.
Simile
Comparing two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Hyperbole
A figure of speech that uses an exaggerated statement or notions that are not meant literally.
Personification
Attributing human qualities to non-human entities or objects.
Animation
Bringing inanimate objects ‘to life’ with language around motion or expression.
Lexical Ambiguity
The existence of two or more possible meanings within a single word.
Puns
Exploiting multiple meanings for an intended word or phrase for a humorous effect.
