Affixation, abbreviation, shortening, compounding, blending, backformation, conversion of word class, initialisms, acronyms, and contractions
Affixation
Adding affixes onto a free lexeme for an intended affect.
Abbreviation
Changing a longer word into a shorter name, such as drs = doctors
Shortening
Removing part of a lexeme to make it shorter
Compounding
Placing two words together into a single lexeme, retaining most of their original form
Blending
Combining words together based on a shared sound or phoneme.
Backformation
creating a new word by removing part of an existing lexeme, e.g. donate - donation
Conversion of word class
changing the word class of a lexeme from one type to another.
Initialism
When the lexeme is pronounced letter by letter.
Acronym
when the lexeme is pronounced as if it were a proper word.
Contraction
removing part of a verb to join it with another verb or the subject.
